Introduction
The province of Jilin lies in the northeastern part of China. The south of Jilin is bordered by Liaoning, Heilongjiang to the north, and Inner Mongolia on the west and the Russian Federation on the east.
The total land area of the region extends for about 187,400 sq km, accounting for 2% of the total land area of entire China. Its capital city is Changchun

The region’s continental monsoon climate is characterized by a clear-cut change of the four distinct seasons. It has a lengthy winter that starts as early as October and lasts until the month of April. At this time, temperatures can go down to a frigid -30°C. In spite of the very freezing winter, people brave the cold to witness the Ice Lantern Festival and enjoy winter sports in some of the best ski resorts in China.
Summers are hot with 80% of the rainfalls falling during the season. The eastern part of the province enjoys the most abundant rainfalls of the year. Eighty percent of the rainfalls are concentrated in summer, with the eastern part enjoying the most abundant rainfalls. The hot and rainy summer months create favorable conditions for faming. The annual average temperature is 3-5 °C.
The pleasant weather during autumn makes it a good time to visit and enjoy the sites of Jilin.
If you want to witness the Azalea Festival in the Longwan Nature Reserve, you can go there in May. However, if you want to go to Jilin for the winter skiing and snow scenery, you should go to Tonghua town during winter.
The province is a rich haven of historical sites and natural wonders. Some of the must-see sights include:
1.Changbaishan -- also known as Tall White Mountain. It is a nature preserve which is a habitat to more than 200 breeds and species of wildlife. Visitors to this natural, undisturbed forest can also enjoy hot springs within the forest. One can also see more than 1,500 species of plants some of which rare species and only found in this corner of the globe. There are also rare birds such as the flying Dragon Bird, which make the mountain forest their home.
A visitor to Changbaishan will also be awed by the blue pristine waters of Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) on the very top of the mountain. The spectacular view from the top is really worth the climb. There is also a waterfall which gives life to the Song Hua River.
On the west side of the mountain, one can also enjoy three lakes--Songhua,Tai Lake, and Dongting lake. This is also where China's largest ice-skating training facility is located.
2.General's Tomb --A seven-storey granite pyramid which was built in the 4th Century. The base of the pyramid occupies almost 1,000 square meters. Inside this enormous stone structure lies a secret passage and the coffin of the king of the Gaogouli nation.
3.Deshengtuo-- a steel monument which is found in Fu Yu County. This was built during the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234 AD). Four dragons are carved on its top while a giant tortoise is carved at its base. The entire monument from top to its base is covered with characters of poetry and praise.
4.Imperial Palace – This is the official residence of Pu Yi, the last reigning emperor of the Qing Dynasty. It is a 12-hectare (30-acre) palace where the administrative departments of the "Puppet Manchurian Government" were housed. Many hills, ponds, gardens, swimming pools and other facilities for recreational purposes are scattered throughout the grounds of this luxurious place. There are also personal memorabilia of the Emperor which are on display.
5.Chagan Lake – It is among the 10 largest fresh water lakes in China. The lake is situated in the midst of the Chagan Lake Nature Reserve.
6.Meteorite Shower Museum – houses the largest piece of meteorite ever found in the world.
Jilin has a total population of more than 27.085 million made up of 49 ethnic groups. Some of the major ethnic groups include Korean, Manchu, Han, Mongolian, Xibo, and Hui.
Savor the taste of local dishes in the Changbaishan Treasure Banquet which is specially prepared by experienced chefs. The dishes which are included in the banquet are prepared from fresh local ingredients such as frog fat, bear's paw, venison, ginseng, monkey-head mushroom and the meat of the Feilong Bird. All these ingredients make up a feast of delicious flavors with nutritious value and tonic effects.
The local cuisine is well-known for its Hashinma Frog dishes. The fat that accumulates in the ovary of the frog is the main ingredient of a very popular and nutritious dish prepared by local chefs.

The five industries that form the backbone of Jilin’s economy include the automobile industry, petroleum chemical industry, agriculture sector, Chinese medicine and biological drugs manufacturing industry, and the high-tech industry such as the photoelectron information industry.
The province is known as the cradle of China's automobile industry because of its highly developed automobile industry. It has one of the most important petroleum chemical industrial bases in China.
The region’s rich soil, excellent environment and other resources all create the perfect environment to develop agriculture and increase the production of corn, soybean, poultry, and milk and milk product processing. The province is also the second largest producer of Timber from more than 7.769 million hectares of timberland.
Jilin is home to more than 219 medicine production enterprises. It is also home to one of the three major medicine gene banks.
The well-developed software industry makes Jilin as the seedbed of China’s optic enterprises. It boasts of having the biggest photoelectron coder production and product processing enterprises. It has a well-developed software industry.
Jilin posted a strong economic growth for 2009. Its GDP reached more than 649 billion yuan, posting a 16 percent growth compared to 2008. Its per capita GDP exceeded the $3,000 mark.
