Independent Rating Agency Says Meridian's Cycles Research Newsletter Once Again Outperforms Nation's Leading Stock Market Timing Models September 9, 2010 -- Investment analyst Bill Meridian spent nine years studying to be a psychotherapist but most of his adult life trying to figure out why the financial markets behave the wacky way they do. The latest six-month report from Timer Digest, an independent Greenwich, Conn., rating agency that monitors more than 100 of the nation's leading market timing models, provides further proof that years of focused research effort have paid off handsomely for the globally astute market timer. Timer Digest ranks the top stock, bond and gold models according to how well their recommendations perform. For the latest report period, Meridian's Cycles Research newsletter was once again atop the leader board for stock investors. In recent years, he has been the top rated gold and second ranked bond market trader as well. Meridian says his approach to investments is "do whatever is working in the market." But it's a bit more complicated than that. He uses both fundamental and technical analytical tools, building on cyclical methods developed by Ed Dewey, George Lindsay and W.D. Gann. And he has written books and developed sophisticated computer software programs aimed at showing others how to use planetary cycles to better time moves in the financial markets. Meridian became interested in the stock market as a teenager and seriously interested in researching the impact of planetary cycles on market activity after earning an MBA degree in 1972. His book titles include Planetary Economic Forecasting and Planetary Stock Trading, now in its third edition. The career investment analyst has been on both the buy and sell side of Wall Street, spent more than 14 years as a fund manager and strategist in the Middle East, and currently divides his time between Tokyo, Abu Dhabi, London and his home office in Vienna. "Critics sometimes question the sanity of working with astrological planetary cycles, but grudgingly admit the approach appears to enjoy some success," he noted. Meridian says the planetary cycles used in his work are as short as the 29-day lunar cycle and long as the slow moving planets that are elliptically circling the sun beyond the orbit of Saturn. Sometimes investment decisions are 100 percent based on astrological indications and other times not at all. Typically, trends become apparent in the planetary combinations before technical sell signals show up, he points out. In a research activity initiated by Cycles Research, DJIA stock prices were shown to cyclically rise and dip during key phases of the moon. Stock prices tend to rise during the new moon when the sun and moon are lined up in the same zodiacal sign and dip at an accelerated pace following the full moon, when the sun and moon are opposed in the heavens roughly 180 degrees apart. The 29-day lunar cycle is relatively weak and can be overcome by more powerful cyclical influences. But the cycles' existence was later confirmed by a study at Michigan State University that looked at market averages the world over, he noted. Meridian thinks the outlook for stocks remains bearish through October and November, but a strong year-end rally will push prices higher in the first quarter of 2011.   Accounts Receivable Factoring Grows As Traditional Business Credit Disappears
 

Accounts receivable factoring is the process of selling invoices to third-party factoring companies at a small discount. Ancient in its origins, receivables factoring has been the backbone of European business financing for centuries, but American companies are only now discovering its many benefits. September 8, 2010 - Fredericksburg, VA - In today's tight credit environment, many cash-starved companies on the hunt for working capital financing are finding their solution in the age-old technique of receivables factoring. Traditionally associated with the textile and garment industries, account receivable factoring has recently expanded to include many different product and service-oriented industries of all sizes. Though it remains a technique largely unknown to American business owners and finance professionals, factoring is attracting the attention of business owners nationwide as its power and flexibility become more widely understood. According to Mike Lieber, a 13-year finance industry veteran, and creator of a new business financing web site, www.smart-business-financing.com, most businesses use a form of receivable factoring every day, but it is called something else: the credit card. "When customers buy things using credit cards, the merchants immediately sell their new receivables to the credit card companies for cash. We don't call this account receivable factoring, but it is, in essence, what business factoring is all about - selling an account receivable at a discount for immediate cash," he says. Credit card companies make their money by charging the businesses that accept their cards a "fee" of a few percentage points, which is accomplished by discounting the amount deposited into the merchant's bank account. The card issuers then collect the full amount -- and their profit -- from the consumer. Factoring companies basically do the same thing with business invoices. Receivables factoring is generally more expensive than traditional business financing, with costs averaging 2- 5% for invoices paid within 45 days. But when the business owner or executive is made aware of the value of the additional services factoring companies provide - such as collections, bookkeeping, accounting, and credit reporting - account receivable factoring looks much more attractive from a cost standpoint. More importantly, Lieber explains, the costs of not factoring invoices can be tremendous. By turning away business because a company cannot afford to extend terms, the owner or executive denies the firm the profit margin and the growth it would enjoy if it were to factor its receivables. As if this weren't enough, receivables factoring is also quite easy when compared to other types of business financing. Banks base their lending decisions on a painstaking analysis of a company's financial strength and credit quality. But to factoring companies, the creditworthiness of the business's customers is what counts. "If a company has invoices to sell and its customers are creditworthy, it has pretty well met the conditions for a factoring program," says Lieber. The factoring application is simple. Factoring is fast, too: The approval process often takes less than a week. Once a factoring program is in place, the nagging problem of working capital financing is reduced, if not eliminated entirely. A business owner will be free to seek lucrative new business that had been out of reach due to capital constraints. Another significant benefit: Factoring helps build business credit, making a firm more attractive to traditional lenders over time. For companies that have been turned down for traditional business financing and those that are growing or would like to expand, account receivable factoring deserves careful consideration.   Polaris Partners with Bexar County Family Justice Center to Improve Services for Abused Women
 

Interim results based on data collected by Polaris Health Directions in partnership with the Bexar County Family Justice Center illustrate the significant impact emotional and physical domestic violence has on the mental health of abused women, the need to identify and address these conditions and the difference treatment can make. Bexar County Family Justice Center, based in San Antonio, Texas, has used Polaris-DV (domestic violence), an automated behavioral health outcomes system, for the past two years to support service planning and to identify mental health issues, as well as strengths. The Family Justice Center houses a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who work together to provide a wide range of coordinated services from crisis response to long-term care for victims of family violence. Among the women at the Family Justice Center who took the Polaris-DV behavioral health assessment at intake, 69 percent showed serious signs of depression and 59 percent exhibited major symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). "What these results say is that many women are suffering from the significant emotional impact of domestic violence, but with effective treatment that focuses on addressing the underlying schema associated with abuse many of these women will get better and lead productive lives," said Linda Toche-Manley, Ph.D., vice president of Polaris. Despite the pervasive impact of psychological abuse and control on these women Polaris's data show that, on average, 73 percent of the women who received services showed improvement in depression scores and 79 percent saw improvement in symptoms associated with PTSD. Yet when clients come to the Family Justice Center, they often do not wish to see a counselor, said Meera Ballal, executive director of the center. But with Polaris-DV, clients begin to better understand their circumstances and the services they need to get better. "The Polaris survey is a systematic reality check for clients and the Family Justice Center," Ballal said. One client, after 90 days of receiving services, shared that each time she takes the assessment it opens her eyes to the help she still needs: "Taking the survey makes me realize that I have not done enough to better my situation, and I need to do something about it," the client said. Polaris-DV can be taken online, and protects the woman's identity, while still allowing for the data to be accessible for case planning. A male-dominated culture and a corrupt and inefficient justice system combine with a staggering 75 percent poverty rate to create the perfect storm of violence against Guatemalan women. Despite rampant corruption and a severe lack of resources, the largest problem facing Guatemala's legal system is chronic inefficiency and inaction. Domestic abuse cases, like the majority of the country's reported crimes, are rarely considered serious enough to investigate. In the rare cases that are investigated, the process is lengthy and typically ineffective. The national conviction rate for serious, violent crimes is one-tenth of 1 percent and even less for crimes not deemed 'serious.' In addition to corruption, a culture steeped in machismo attitude dissuades the vast majority of women from even reporting domestic abuse in the first place. As is common in male-dominated cultures, Guatemalan women are viewed as second-class citizens and lack power both in the privacy of their homes and in the larger community. The GOD'S CHILD Project plans to create a new department, complete with two lawyers specializing in domestic violence, a psychologist and a social worker. In its first year, the program aims to convict 15 aggressors, increasing the nation's conviction rate by a shocking 21 percent. "It is a grave contradiction when we tell the girls and women in our organization that they have dignity when their basic human rights are being violated so grossly and regularly," Atkinson said.
