Chinese Etiquette

The intention of this section is to give you easy to read, short tips on Chinese etiquette for meetings, business meals or any other social gathering in China.

China comes as something of a culture shock to most foreigners. To find an explanations why things are said and done the way they are, you can choose from eight categories (the ones in the red square boxes). Next to each category is a list of topics highlighting what's considered good or bad manners.

Keep in mind that China is changing: modernization, increasing exposure to foreigners and compliance with international business practices are shifting the traditional way people do things. With this, the younger generations are opening up to other - in particular Western - influences, so Chinese customs and etiquette are changing as well.
